DePuy tapped Psoup, supported by a group of prominent surgeons from around the world, to develop a ground-up solution for a fracture of the femoral neck. In the span of a year and a half, Psoup explored a variety of solutions, designed, prototyped and evaluated them at cadaver labs, before focusing on a concept, finalizing the design and transferring it back to DePuy for production. The implant is a multiple-sized/multiple-part titanium hip plate and lag screw with several novel features to restrict rotation and limit collapse. The instrument set consists of approximately 30 instruments and allows the surgery to be performed confidently through a 4 cm incision rather than a 12 cm incision. Nine patents filed and MDEA awards in 2008 are some indication of the level of innovation achieved.
Psoup performed the role of design team project management and the designer of all implants and instruments.
